Catholic Schoolhouse for us, started out as a fantastic idea. You go to a classroom setting once a week, so your kids learn how to raise hands, take turns speaking, walking in line, etc., then you go home and spend the rest of the week expanding on everything that was introduced in class. You might need to supplement math and English with your own curriculum, but everything else will be Catholic Schoolhouse. Catholic Schoolhouse in practice was overwhelming, exhausting, but fun...once a week in class. Tuesday through Friday, we never even looked at the Catholic Schoolhouse stuff. We might listen to a CD of their memory verses set to music, but the book itself? No. Expanding on what was discussed Monday? We attempted it once with the Trojan War, but the book from the library just sat until we returned it. Then, all of the changes happened. First, our chapter lost the tutor for the 10-12 year old group. Then, after I had submitted my lesson plans for the second quarter, I (along with the remaining 2 other tutors) was told I had to totally rework my lesson plans to have more memory work, and less activities. I didn't like that idea...AT ALL...but I did my best to comply. Thankfully, before I had to actually teach the new way, I was given the option to step down and just be an assistant. Gladly! However, when I stepped down, one of my students left (who apparently had had a bad experience in science class, and was only continuing to come because I was her tutor...awww....), along with her siblings and her mother, who was one of the 2 nursery people. After the first class in the new style, I was less than thrilled, but Emma insisted she still liked it, and wanted to continue to go. Okay. Before the second class in the new style, an email went out, saying that the science tutor was also stepping down, and would no longer be teaching science OR chorus, and that chorus was now becoming recorder class. That was apparently the straw that broke Emma's back, because when I explained the newest changes to her, she insisted she was NOT going back. Try as I might to convince her to try it, or to at least finish the quarter, she refused. Truth be told, I wasn't at all heartbroken to have my Monday mornings free again, and to have the stress of getting Emma to Catholic Schoolhouse on time gone, but I did feel a little bad about leaving after we had JUST started a new quarter. Oh, well. In the meantime, I realized that one of my friends had started a Catholic Schoolhouse Lite this year, and that she had an opening. Hmmm... They meet only twice a month on Monday afternoons for 2 hours. One time they'll do 2 hours of art, and the next time they'll do 2 hours of science. AND, they are on almost exactly the same "week" that we were on. Seamless transition! So, we're switching to that one the end of the month. It'll be much less stress, no early mornings, and Emma already has at least 1 friend in the group! So, we're very excited to try that version of Catholic Schoolhouse! Hopefully, it will be much less stressful than the main version. That's pretty much all my news for now. My appointment with the Napro doctor is on this coming Monday, though, so if you think about it, would you pray that it goes well, and that I can leave the appointment with a viable plan, or better yet, answers? Thanks!
